Record Cruise Season: Hamburg is the new Home Port for AIDA Ships

Hamburg is delighted: AIDA Cruises, a cruise shipping company, has made Hamburg the home port for its new ships. To accommodate the enormous growth in cruise visits and provide adequate port infrastructure to meet the additional requirements, a third cruise ship terminal will be built. The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) will be in charge of the project.

550,000 passengers and 177 ship calls made 2013 a record cruise season for Hamburg. The Hanseatic city has seen strong growth in the cruise trade and become one of the most popular cruise ship destinations in Europe. Many economic sectors are benefitting from this development. The latest figures reveal that the phenomenal growth in cruise ship tourism flushes around 270 million euros annually into the metropolis.

And the positive trend is expected to continue. The popular cruise ships with the bright red mouth at the bow will soon be a frequent sight in the port: AIDA Cruises has decided to make the port of Hamburg its new home port. The new AIDA ships are environmentally friendly and particularly fuelefficient.

A third cruise terminal with parking facilities will be built on an approximately 10-hectare large area right in the centre of the port. It is due to be completed by 2015; construction works will commence in April 2014. The over 300 metre-long AIDA passenger liners will then be able to berth at the new quay. When completed, the new terminal will be able to handle more than 7,000 travellers and their luggage within the space of 10 hours.

The Hamburg State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Transport and Innovation has put the HPA in charge of realising the third cruise centre in conjunction with Flughafen Hamburg GmbH to cater for the growing number of cruise ships and secure the longer term future of cruise shipping in the port of Hamburg.
