Hamburg – a popular Travel Destination in Europe
The city of Hamburg is a tourist hotspot and the number of visitors is growing every year. Apart from the port with its big container and cruise vessels, Hamburg‘s musicals draw millions of tourists into the city. In November Hamburg opened its fourth large musical theatre, Theater an der Elbe [Theatre on the Elbe] right in the heart of the port, thus solidifying its position as the world’s third most important musical metropolis, preceded only by New York and London. Ever since Hamburg started to stage musicals in the mid 1980s, the number of tourists has been increasing.
According to a survey by Statistikamt Nord [Statistical Office North] Hamburg had roughly twelve million overnight guests in 2013, which is more than double the number from the previous ten years. Hamburg has become one of the ten most sought-after travel destinations in Europe, not only for tourists but for business travellers and conference visitors as well. For large events, such as the Harbour’s Birthday or the Cruise Days, and during trade fairs visitors flock to the Hanseatic city. If you plan to visit Hamburg, it is recommended that you book your accommodation well in advance.
The Marriott Hotel Hamburg and the Renaissance Hamburg Hotel are the official hotels of the 29th IAPH World Ports Conference. Both are located in Hamburg’s city centre, close to the Congress Center Hamburg (CCH) which will be the day-time conference venue. A free shuttle service for all conference delegates will operate between the conference hotels and the Congress Center Hamburg.
The two hotels are within 3 minutes of walking distance from each other, making it easy for conference guests to socialise, network or enjoy an after-conference drink together. The IAPH Officers’ Meeting and the Committee Meetings will be held at the Marriott Hotel Hamburg on the Sunday and Monday of the conference week. The Early Reception event will take place at the Renaissance Hamburg Hotel on Sunday, 31 May 2015.
